Current and Planned Future Research

1. Current Projects

a. Continuous work and interests

Gender, Sex, and Family Relations in the World
Processes and Global Patterns of Inequality
Dimensions of Culture as a World System

b. New Projects

Capitals, Nations, and the World. This a globally comparative comparative project with a historical dimension, starting with the rise of nation-states and thereby of national capital cities, focusing on capitals as representations of power and, secondly, as sites of power. It includes a strong iconographic perspective, on symbolic representation, looking particularly at urban layout, architecture, urban nomenclature, and monuments. But it shall also try to assess effects of  different socio-sopatial locations of capitals for the functioning of power. . The empirical investigation phase started in earnest in 2005, but goes back to the l990s and it has already spawned two article publications, .Monumental Europe. in 2002 and .Eastern Drama. 2006. The project is meant to yield at least one book of my own, and perhaps one or two collective, edited  ones.

European Social Processes In connection with a decision to publish (in 2007 or 2008) a French, and a second Polish edition of my book on Europe, the update for the 2000 German edition will be taken further, particularly but not only with respect to developments in Eastern Europe.

2. Plans for the Near Future

These plans follow upon earlier work on global social studies with a historical time dimension.

Modernities and Their (Des)Illusions. A World History This will draw upon my earlier work on the four main world routes to and through modernity, now deployed for a book-long compaerative study. It will focus on key events and configuations of social forces , which crucially affect  experiences and interpretations of modernity in different parts of the world. Modernity is in my work defined in terms of time orientation, and not in terms of any specific institutional forms.

Class Changes and the Shaping  of Other 21st Century Social Forces This is meant to be a sociological analysis of power and protest in the 21st century world, with a comparative look back to the 20th cenntury. What social forces sustain powers and regimes in existence,  which ones form resistance and make for regime and/or social change? European 20th century social history was to a large extent class history, in other parts of the worlde much less so. What is happening now and in the foreseeable future?

Modes of Social Theorizing My angle of interest here is a sociology of knowledge curiosity about intellectual change in the fields of social and political theory and social philosophy, with respect to thematic orientation, ideological stance, rhetorical forms and cognitive claims. This idea starts off from earlier published work on critical theory and on sociological horizons.
